Lasagna Sandwiches are made the seasoned meat and cheese blends you will often find in lasagna, only without the noodles. They are similar to meatball sandwiches in that both have
seasoned meat with melted cheese, though their flavors are distinctly different. These hot and delicious lasagna sandwiches feature long, soft sandwich buns filled with a mixture of lean ground beef and ground pork sausage, seasoned with tomato sauce, herbs and spices and a blend of mozzarella, ricotta and Parmesan cheeses. Tops are cut off the sandwich buns and the insides are hollowed-out. The meat and cheese mixtures are then placed in the buns in layers. Grated mozzarella cheese is sprinkled over the top and the bun tops replaced. These sandwiches are then wrapped in aluminum foil and baked for about 20 minutes. The result is a hot and steamy sandwich filling covered with melted
mozzarella in a warm and chewy sandwich roll that slightly crisps on the outside. If you only need to make sandwiches for a few, simply store the meat and cheese mixtures separately in the refrigerator or freezer, and stuff the buns when you are ready to bake in the oven.

Ingredients

Meat Filling

3/4 lb. lean ground beef

1/4 lb. ground pork sausage

1 8-oz. can tomato sauce

1 clove garlic, minced

1/4 teaspoon cornstarch

1/8 teaspoon sugar

1/4 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon dried onion flakes

1/4 teaspoon oregano

1/4 teaspoon basil

1 teaspoon chopped flat fresh parsley

Cheese Filling

1 beaten egg

3/4 cup ricotta cheese

1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

6-8 sturdy long-shaped sandwich rolls

Directions

Preheat oven to 400° F.

In a medium skillet, cook ground beef and sausage until brown. Drain off any fat. Add tomato sauce and all other Meat Filling ingredients. Stir to combine. Cover and cook over low heat for 5 minutes. Uncover and cook 5 minutes more, stirring frequently.

In a medium mixing bowl, combine egg and cheeses and stir until blended.

Cut a thin slice off tops of each roll (about 1/2-inch thick on the sides). Hollow out centers of bottom parts of rolls, leaving 1/2-inch-thick shells. Spoon meat mixture into hollowed buns (about 1/2-inch depth). Spoon cheese mixture over meat mixture (about 1/4-inch depth). Spoon another thin layer of meat mixture over top to cover cheese mixture. Sprinkle about 1-2 tablespoons grated mozzarella cheese over top of second meat layer. Place roll tops back on top of rolls.

Wrap each sandwich individually in aluminum foil and bake for 20-25 minutes.
